Eligibility

The LGC Art Prize has been created by Theo Paphitis to recognise and appreciate two-dimensional artworks in any painting or drawing media.

The competition is open to UK based artists from ages 18 and above.

Entry is free and one artwork per entrant is permitted, any additional artworks submitted will be disregarded. 

Any submissions that are photography, digitally enhanced/generated, printmaking, manipulated artwork or any form of 3D work are not eligible to be entered into this competition. The artist that created the entered piece of artwork must be the one who entered it. Anything of an offensive or inappropriate nature will be immediately disqualified from the competition. 

The artwork you enter must be your own intellectual property. We will not accept any artwork that is a direct copy of someone else’s work (artistic interpretations are not included within this) or works that are made from a tutorial. Entries that have been extensively exhibited in established galleries or have won a major competition will not be accepted as entries for this prize. 

London Graphic Centre may ask for artworks to be sent to them for further inspection and consideration. The top 10 shortlisted artworks must be available for viewing on September 14th and be exhibited for a short period of time in the London Graphic Centre store in Covent Garden. For publicity purposes, we may require photography and videography of the top 10 shortlisted artworks and the artists behind them. Please do not submit an image of an artwork that you do not have access to. 

Entrants are expected to have read the guidelines and criteria thoroughly to ensure they understand the terms of entry.


How to enter

Upon registration, you will receive an email on how to complete your entry. 

  • The maximum file size is 3MB
  • You are welcome to include your instagram handle in your entry
  • Please include the title of your artwork, the year it was made and the mediums used
  • Please also include the dimensions of your artwork
  • Images must be a minimum of 1000px wide with a resolution of 72px per inch minimum 
  • No copyrighted or watermarked images will be accepted
  • The image of the artwork submitted should be a clear, high quality photograph 
  • No unnecessary or irrelevant objects or backgrounds should feature in the photo 
  • The image should be an accurate representation of the artwork 
  • It is best that the artwork is captured in natural light and of high resolution making it suitable for reproduction within online content

Publicity

The Artist hereby agrees to grant all necessary rights licences, approvals and authorisations to the organisers to include, inter alia, the Artist's work in any footage recorded or captured during the competition/shortlist exhibition, including the right to use such images for the promotion of the competition, exhibiting the work publicly, referring to the work on digital platforms in the control of the Organisers, its affiliates or subsidiaries or parents, and for the avoidance of doubt, the Artist hereby grants the Organiser with non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty free licence to use and publish such footage or materials obtained or other materials in electronic format for purposes connected solely with the competition. Where further consent is necessary from the Artist, it shall not be unreasonably withheld.

Artworks can be withdrawn at any time prior to the deadline of July 9th from the competition by emailing artprize@londongraphics.co.uk 

Any withdrawal request submitted after the closing date will not be considered.

How do I register?

It can be something that has been previously created so long as it hasn’t been exhibited in established galleries or won any other competitions. You must also have access to the original piece.

How is the People's Choice winner selected?

Once the competition closes, a dedicated page will be enabled, allowing the public to cast one vote for their favourite artwork. The artwork with the most votes wins.


Terms & Conditions

1. Introduction

The LGC Art Prize (‘the Competition’) is organised by the London Graphic Centre in conjunction with Ryman Limited (‘the Organisers’).

These Terms and Conditions, together with any specific guidelines or rules notified by the Organisers as relevant to the Competition, apply to entrants (‘Artists’) submitting their work for entry into the Competition. By entering the Competition you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions and you acknowledge that your personal information will be used in accordance with the Privacy Policies of the Organisers.

The Organisers reserve the right to cancel or amend the Competition or these Terms and Conditions and related guidelines, submission deadlines, or judging criteria at any time and without prior notice. Any such changes will be posted on the London Graphic Centre website.

2. Eligibility

The Competition is open to all artists of all abilities over the age of 18 based in the United Kingdom. If you or an immediate family member is an employee of the Organisers, you cannot enter the competition.

The Artist must be the owner of the submitted artworks and the work(s) submitted are of their own origination. The Artist must hold all moral and intellectual property rights in the submitted artworks.

If there is any question about the authenticity the Organisers reserve the right to request proof of authorship and if this is not satisfactory, then the entry will be disqualified.

The Organisers reserves the right to disqualify an entry, where the organisers after best endeavours are unable to make contact with the Artist.

The Organisers have the sole right to refuse submissions based on failure to meet the brief requirements, inappropriateness of content, and/or concerns regarding copyright infringement in the original work.

3. How to enter

There are no entry fees for this competition. You can enter the competition by registering your interest on the competition page of the website and follow the guidelines.

The submitted entry (‘work’) must be a 2D original and can be created using any painting or drawing media. There is no minimum size limit but the work must not exceed 1.2m in its greatest dimension.

The image(s) and completed entry form must be submitted online by the stated deadline. Entries received late will be invalid.

The artwork should be submitted online in the first instance. The image of the artwork should be a clear, high quality photograph that must not show any unnecessary or irrelevant content, such as frames, mounts, walls, tables or any other kind of background. The image should be taken in bright natural light, as well as being of a high resolution for reproduction online. The maximum file size is 3MB. Images of artwork must be at least 1000px wide (with a resolution of at least 72px per inch).

A third party (eg gallery, agent or other representative) may submit work on behalf of you, but the third party must confirm:

  • receipt of the Artist’s permission, and provide evidence of all full authority and legal right, to submit the work and;
  • that in order to provide information regarding the work, they have first consulted with the Artist and made all appropriate enquiries for the purposes of providing information and taken the necessary steps to ensure accuracy of all information provided and;
  • agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of the competition as the artist would be had they entered and;
  • do hereby indemnify the Organisers against all liabilities, costs, expenses, damages and losses (including but not limited to any direct, indirect or consequential losses, loss of profit, loss of reputation and all interests, penalties costs and expenses suffered by or incurred by the Organisers arising out of or in connection with any claim made against the Organisers for actual or alleged infringement of a third party’s intellectual property rights arising from the submitted work.

4. Judging

The Organisers will appoint five judges of such qualification as it sees fit and at its sole discretion. All works will be judged anonymously.

By submitting the digital entry form, you accept that if successful in Stage 1 the selected artwork must be available in order to proceed to Stage 2 and be delivered for physical exhibition and display as part of the shortlist exhibition. Dates for the delivery window will be given to you before the shortlist has been selected and confirmed. The Organisers will contact you to confirm the artwork’s availability before confirming you to proceed to Stage 2.

The Organisers shall endeavour to notify successful Artists who have been successful in reaching Stage 2 by 25th August 2023. All selected Artists will then be contacted and provided with full delivery details as to where their artwork should be submitted and the relevant dates. The delivery of the work to and from the exhibition is the responsibility of the artists. The Organisers may seek further high quality images of their artwork for inclusion in any marketing or promotional materials.

The Organisers endeavour to take care of the artwork, but will not be liable for any loss or damage to any artworks physically submitted at any point, however caused, whether in transit to and from the exhibition, or during any period of storage, packing or unpacking, exhibition or in any period in which the work is in the Organisers possession.

The Organisers recommend that you take out insurance to cover the artwork, especially whilst in transit and while at the Organisers premises. Having insurance is not, however, obligatory for entry to the competition.

If you are selected for Stage 2, you will also receive an invitation to an exclusive VIP judging event on 14th September 2023 at the London Graphic Centre, Covent Garden, where the judges will have had the opportunity to view the original artwork and decide upon the winner earlier in the day. The winner will be announced and prizes awarded at the event.

Artists are responsible for paying all travel costs and expenses incurred if they wish to attend the Judging Event.

Any prize money paid to winning artists is paid gross of all taxes and charges. Prizes are as follows:

  • First Prize: £5000 + £500 worth of materials from London Graphic Centre + £500 Pebeo voucher + £500 from Winsor & Newton and Liquitex
  • Peoples Choice: £2000 + £250 worth of art materials from the London Graphic Centre + £200 from Winsor & Newton and Liquitex
  • The One to Watch: £500 + £100 worth of art materials from the London Graphic Centre + £100 from Winsor & Newton and Liquitex and mentoring from a Citylit tutor
  • All uploaded artwork will be available to be viewed online from 9th August 2023. Members of the public will be able to vote online for the People's Choice Award between 9th August 2023 to 16th August 2023. The artwork awarded the highest number of votes by the closing date of 16th August 2023 will be awarded the People's Choice Award. For avoidance of doubt, you cannot win both the First Prize and the People's Choice Award. If the overall winner is also selected as the People's Choice Award then the Overall Winner, will forfeit the People's Choice Award and this will be passed down to the person with the second largest number of votes.

    The People’s Choice Award shall be determined and awarded in a fashion determined by the Organisers alone. For the avoidance of doubt, the Organisers shall have full and final discretion on all questions pertaining to the award of this prize.

    The return of work after the shortlist exhibition is also the responsibility of the Artists. The company reserves the right to dispose of any works after the exhibition that have (i) not been collected by the Artists or (ii) where the Artists have made no attempt to collect their work within 3 months of the collection date.

    Notwithstanding the above, prize quantum and composition remains at all times at the sole discretion from the Organisers.

    It is the responsibility of the winning Artists to declare, if relevant, such winnings as income to their local tax authorities and the winning artists shall be wholly liable for any taxes payable on such awards.

5. Photography & Copyright

Without prejudice to the terms, the Organisers recognise that the copyright in all works created by the Artist remains with the Artist, however it is a necessary condition of entry, and by so entering, the Artist hereby agrees to grant all necessary rights licences, approvals and authorisations to the company to include, inter alia, the Artists work in any footage recorded or captured during the competition/shortlist exhibition, including the right to use such images for the promotion of the competition, exhibiting the work publicly, referring to the work on digital platforms in the control of the Organisers, its affiliates or subsidiaries or parents, and for the avoidance of doubt, the Artist hereby grants the Organiser with non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty free licence to use and publish such footage or materials obtained or other materials in electronic format for purposes connected solely with the competition. Where further consent is necessary from the Artist, it shall not be unreasonably withheld.

6. Data protection

The Artist agrees to be placed on the Organiser’s mailing lists for newsletters, marketing purposes, exclusive offers and any other information that we may send you and grant full permission in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations. The Artist reserves the rights to opt out of this at any time.

7. Liability/Misc

The Organisers cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the competition or as a result of accepting any prize. The Organisers are not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any computer on-line systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software failure of any email or entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet, including any injury or damage to entrant’s or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in the competition.

The Organisers reserves the right to cancel the competition or amend these terms and conditions at any time, without prior notice. The competition and terms and conditions will be governed by English law and shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
